about

Hevra Kadisha is an interdisciplinary collective from the East Bay comprised of Kate Laster and Steph Kudisch. The collective makes site specific work that calls on participation through stewardship and the creation of new public memory. Using the lens of mourning customs, grief, and burial rights, Hevra Kadisha threads the past to our treatment of the living. Hevra Kadisha was formed in 2019 to adapt research as artwork in tandem to Laster’s master of arts thesis, GENTRIFICATION OF THE DEAD: How the Displacement Of Cemeteries Paved The Way For Rethinking Monuments In San Francisco.

Exploring the diaspora of human movement through a participatory performance and collaged sound piece by Kudisch, "Stones Speak" is an ongoing project recentering publics with unseen knowledge.
